The book I read was The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan. This book is 432 pages long. Another series is the classic Percy Jackson series and the lesser-known spin-off book series The Trials of Apollo. One part I love about this book is that it makes you think deeper into the story by forcing you to think about each character and what side they are and if there are any sides.

<SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!>

ONLY READ THIS SUMMARY IF YOU HAVE READ THE 2 OTHER BOOKS BEFORE IT IN THIS SERIES!

Thank you for boarding The Ship of the Dead.

We will be serving chips with a side of Ragnarök until we arrive.

“I hate this plan. Let’s do it.” -Magnus Chase

Magnus is just a not-so-regular kid who needs to battle gods and other things to stall Ragnarök for as long as possible, but now, it’s just around the corner, with more stakes than ever. Loki has escaped from his eternal cave and has now joined his crew to wait for the ice to thaw out so his ship can leave, with his millions of crew. Now, Magnus has to train to be able to steer his own ship into the freezing waters of Jötunheimr, the land of the giants. Once Magnus has finally finished his training, he calls all his friends to board the ship and go out into Jötunheimr. They travel through the sea until a cold breeze hits them, the welcoming signal to Jötunheimr. It gradually gets colder, until even Magnus and Blitzen, the most resilient to the cold, can’t handle it. Blitzen and Hearthstone are sent away on their own little quest to find the mead of poetry or something. When they first go and need to find something, they find something that definitely doesn’t seem human. They come back and steal Magnus, find the beast again (a.k.a. Hearth’s dad who abused him) and they kill him and eat his heart. (HLECK) They give the ring of evil back and then find the whetstone they need to get to the mead. They outwit the slave guards and find the gate, but they can’t open it, but luckily there is someone who is prisoner there and they have her take out the hose and pour in the container. Finally, they meet back up with the crew and they go and meet up with Magnus’s grandfather’s wife. They stay there for a little bit and then set off to battle Loki. Who will win in the battle of wits, strength, and strategies? Will Magnus be able to catch Loki and stop him from starting Ragnarok? Or will he fail and will the end of the world continue unperturbed? To find out, read The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan to find out!

The Boy on the Wooden Box

The book I read was The Boy on the Wooden Box by Leon Leyson. This book is 240 pages long. A surprising fact about the author (well, if you aren’t in PA 6th grade) is that he survived the Holocaust. Another interesting fact is that he died of lymphoma. This book is about Leon’s experiences in the Holocaust. My favorite part about this book is that Leon has so many tense moments of pure luck, and it makes me want to see if he lived even though I knew he had.

“Not even the scariest of fairy tales could have prepared me for the monsters I would confront while just a boy of ten … or for the hero, disguised as a monster himself, who would save my life.”-Leon Leyson

Leon is a small boy in a family of 7, the youngest. He enjoys playing with his brothers and never tires of new activities. His two brothers, Tsalig and David are his two role models and care for him throughout his life. His friends in Narewka, Poland are also caring, even though they do not share the same religion. Some of them were rude to him during one week, the week before Easter, but he never thought anything of it. His dad was employed at a glass-making factory which made it big and moved to Kraków. His dad was one of the lucky few to move with the company, and he promised to gather enough money to allow them all to move to Kraków. His mother struggled to care for everybody because she was a single person taking care of 5 needy children, but she managed. When his dad finally gathered enough money to allow them to move, they packed up their belongings and said goodbye to all of their relatives. In Kraków, they lived relatively well, being able to buy enough food to live and being employed really helped. But then, in one night, everything changed. Germany invaded Poland and took control of the government. They still lived relatively peacefully, if not in fear, but the Germans were still neutral in their behavior toward the Jews. Immediately, they changed. They abused Jews and forced them into ghettos and camps. Then, when all hope seemed lost, they find the man who saved their life, Oskar Schindler. Will they be able to make it out unscathed? Or will they all lose someone they love? To find out, read The Boy on the Wooden Box, a memoir by Leon Leyson.

Rebel Seoul

The book I read was Rebel Seoul by Axie Oh. This book is 400 pages long. One thing you probably did not know about her is that she is a first generation Korean-American. My favorite thing about this is that there are so many Korean words that I can understand, which I love.

Lee Jaewon is a normal kid, trying to get by at his school, but he has a secret that could get him expelled from his new school. He is actually a kid from Old Seoul, the city that is now apart from Neo Seoul. He luckily got a scholarship into one of the most prestigious schools in Neo Seoul. Jaewon’s struggling to keep up his scholarship, but he still manages to get by with his outstanding SimTech grades. During a concert, he finds a girl that is standing far away from the crowd, just like him, and sees her get arrested and tased countless times. Later, he goes to his hometown and gets an illegal drug (Enhancer) for Alex for their placement tests tomorrow. Later, Jaewon meets up with Alex’s SimTech group for the test. Then, they find an unexpected group member on their team, Sela, the face of Neo Seoul. Next, they find out that if they are going to die in the simulation, they will die in real life. Then, a member of their group dies. When his little brother vows revenge, Alex brushes it off. After, they are called to the Tower, the tallest building in Neo Seoul. There they meet Dr. Koga, who tells them about both Tera and Ama, Jaewon ends up partnered with the girl he had already met twice, Tera. The first was at the concert, while the second was during the SimTech testing. When Jaewon acts friendly, she brushes it off and tells him not to get too involved. After that, he goes on a mission to catch the rebels from the information they had pried from the main leader of the rebels. He already learned this from his enemy, Peter Taesung, but he didn’t trust him until it was actually proven. He goes on the mission with Tera, but they crash right above the base, and Jaewon saves Tera from drowning in the lake, but later almost gets killed until Oh Kangto comes and saves him. After that, Jaewon goes into the interrogation room for Oh Kangto, and finds some…information. Then, Alex, Tera, Ama, and him go and shop and eat dinner before meeting with Alex’s father, the leader of Neo Seoul. They fall asleep, but wake up to the sound of Alex getting bullied by his father. They rush him to seek medical attention, and Tera and Jaewon sleep on the porch. After betraying the nation, Jaewon goes to school because of an incident. Alex gets half-killed and arrested. After they are both thrown in jail, Alex creates a distraction and allows Jaewon to slip past. He meets up with Ama and they both ride a train, with Ama staying on the train. Then, he finds Tera in the tower, but Taesung is holding her hostage. Will Jaewon be able to get Tera and escape? Or will his entire misfortunes be worthless? Find out in Rebel Seoul by Axie Oh!

Legend

The book I read was Legend by Marie Lu. This book is 305 pages long. She also published Warcross and Prodigy, the sequel to Legend. My favorite part about this book was that there was always action on every page.

Daniel Altan Wing, also known as Day, is the Republic’s greatest criminal, but is he really? Day is in desperate need of cash to cure his little brother of the plague, but how does he do that? He storms into the new hospital and tries to steal some medicine, but fails and only gets some resisters, before getting caught. When June’s brother, Metias tries to stop him, the now-weakened Day takes a lousy shot and hits him in the shoulder. Later, when June arrives they see that Metias was stabbed in the heart. Infuriated, June vows to find her brother’s killer and murder them as well. When she goes undercover, it doesn’t go so well. While Day was still recuperating, Tess gets him into one of the rebel’s households, and they leave soon after. Then, Day goes to bet on Skiz fights, cheap fights that can get you a buck or two if you know how. When Tess accidentally gets thrown into the ring, June takes notice and helps her out by beating up Kaede. After the mob has become angry and thrown June to the ground, Day helps her out and gives her a place to stay. Soon after, June starts to betray her own feelings and kisses Day. (when they were drunk. CALM DOWN, PEOPLE!) After that, she follows Day out to his house and betrays his trust by capturing him and his family. Once he gets captured, June soon finds out that Day did not fail his Trial, but actually got a perfect score. When they find out the truth, June creates a plan to get Day out of jail, but it involves sacrificing one person. She talks to Kaede, who is a Patriot, and they form a plan. Will all go accordingly and have 1 or 0 casualties? Or will the entire rebellion come crumbling down? To find out, read Legend by Marie Lu!

The book I read was The Fire by James Patterson and Jill Dembowski. This book is 352 pages long. Another book by James Patterson is Jack & Jill, the third installment in the Alex Cross series. I love this book because it assumes that you had read the other books in the series and gets straight into the action.

Their parents tell them not to come, but they still defy their orders and leave for it. Wisty and Whit part ways, with Wisty going to take down The One, and Whit going to save their parents. Wisty takes up a job as a student at The One’s academy, and finds some interesting things in his room. Then she takes up a battle, but runs away to a portal shortly after. Meanwhile, Whit finds the group again after accidentally leaving them in the desert. Now, it’s a happy reunion as they’re about to be eaten by Lost Ones. Then, Celia and her half-light friends come in and save the day! Back to Wisty. Now that she’s gone through the portal, she is relatively safe because Straight and Narrows can’t go through the portals. Then, Pearce comes and tackles Wisty from behind. The book I read was Witch and Wizard by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet. This book is 368 pages long. Another book by James Patterson is along came a spider, the 1st book in the Alex Cross series. I love this book because they keep switching between perspectives at random times and leave us eager for more.

They’re just two normal people when soldiers burst into their home screaming Witch and Wizard. Confessions: The Private School Murders

Image result for confessions the private school murders

The book I read was Confessions: The Private School Murders by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. This book is 400 pages long. If you liked the first book and the mysteries in it, you should definitely read this sequel. This is part of a 4 book series. I also like the descriptions that aren’t too gory but still descriptive enough so that we can visualize it.

<SPOILER ALERT!! READ THE 1ST BOOK RIGHT NOW!!>

This book starts off with the leftover Angels being introduced to their new chaperone: their (not known) Uncle Jacob right after their brother, Matthew, has been convicted of a double homicide of his wife and supposed child of his father after an “affair”. (UUUGHGHHGHGHGHGH) Jacob sets rules that they accept. (even though they never had rules before) Then, the next day after school, Tandy sees a corpse of a wealthy girl, Adele, from her own school shot 3 times in the park. After that, they leave for court to witness Matty’s trial and skipping school. Then, they get grounded for not telling Jacob about where they were going. The next day, Tandy starts interviewing kids at her school to find out who could’ve murdered her. Since she has to leave after that, she leaves C.P. up to interview everybody. She finds out that another murder had also been committed, but this one looked like a suicide, yet there was no suicide note and the girl was on anti-depressants. Then, Tandy and C.P., on their way to school, find another dead body on the bridge on their way to school. This was also a murder, and it was done the same way, by a gun. (The suicide was also found with a gun in their hand) C.P. books them an interview with the victim’s mom, and they find that she was also on drugs. Tandy grabs the bottle and runs off to Matty’s (2nd) hearing. The case keeps getting worse and worse until it feels like Matty won’t be able to back himself up without the biggest piece of evidence there could be. Tandy is on the trail of both murders and is starting to connect the dots, but will she solve the cases before she becomes the next death? Will she safely find the murderers and bring Matty to justice? Find out in Confessions: The Private School Murders by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro!

Auggie & Me: Three Wonder Stories

The book I read was Auggie and Me: Three Wonder Stories by R.J. Palacio. This book is 303 pages long. Another book in this “series” is Wonder and 365 Days of Wonder. If you like this book, you’ll probably like Ugly by Robert Hoge.

The 1st mini book is The Julian Chapter. It explains what Julian was going through during the time he was mean to Auggie. Julian first had lost one of his friends, Jack Will, and then started being mean to Auggie. Julian, at first, was backed up by almost all of the 5th grade, but ever since the nature trip, everybody turned on him. The principal found out about the notes he had been putting in Auggie and Jack’s lockers, and somehow he only got the really bad ones. Julian was suspended, and then his parents decided to quit the school. Later, he said sorry. Now, Pluto is about Auggie’s oldest friend, Christopher. Christopher moved away and now they don’t talk that much. Christopher always forgets something when he goes to school, whether it be his trombone or his gym shorts, his research paper or his math book. He forgets 3 things today, and he asks his mom to get them for him. He gets in trouble, doesn’t really understand the math but can’t ask since he has a rock band, and is thinking of his stupid mom being late. Now, after the after school rock band, his dad comes in to pick him up, which is unusual, and meets his mom at the hospital. He then asks Auggie for help on the math. The next story is Shingaling, which is about Charlotte’s life and why she barely notices Auggie. On the 1st day of school, she had set up her dream lunch table, but then Summer moves to Auggie’s table. Then, Charlotte, Ximena, and Summer make it into the dance for the school. They become good friends and Summer and Charlotte learn that they both know the blind, homeless guy and they both give him dollars. They solve the mystery of the missing guy, and they have a sleepover with Ximena, who used to be mean to them but now she’s nice. If you want to spend more time in Auggie’s world, read Auggie and Me: Three Wonder Stories by R.J. Palacio!

Lions of Little Rock

The book I read was The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine. This book is 279 pages long. Another book by this author is The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had. If you like this book, you’ll probably like The Honest Truth, a great book in my opinion since I’ve read it. I love how one fateful encounter changed everybody’s world and taught Marlee how to do things she never could have dreamed of before she met Liz.

Do you have a friend who’s “colored”? Well, you can thank the people who worked long and hard to finally win and let us go to school with other races and actually be friends. Anyway, 12 year old Marlee is a shy little girl that can be pushed around without saying anything back. (I do not recommend this, EVER!) That all changes when a new, tanned girl comes into her life. They quickly become friends, kind of, and they start working on a project together. Liz convinces her to talk during the presentation for a magic square book. They practice her speech, but on the day that the speech was dated for, Liz mysteriously disappears. Marlee then learns that Liz was caught “passing” as white. Marlee is determined to get back her friend and tries to keep in touch with her as much as possible. They finally agree to go the rock crusher every time Liz’s little brother, George or something, has baseball practice. One day, Red and JT follow Marlee to the rock crusher and while they’re going back, Marlee stumbles on a box of dynamite with 12 sticks. Red steals them, and Marlee goes home. Luckily, Marlee isn’t caught, but when they see each other at the zoo and Red leaving his keys on the bench, they hatch a plan. Marlee quickly steals one of the 2 keys and opens the trunk to steal the dynamite; but when Red walks in, she stumbles and falls into the trunk and locks herself inside. Will Marlee successfully escape and save the day? Or will her luck finally run out? To find out, read The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine.
